By probing the boundaries between known and unknown, Claire Webb questions established routes to understanding. Through optically rich material manipulations Claire Webb fabricates objects of wonder and inquiry that regard the nature of knowledge and perception. These materials, whether in their natural form, or engineered into new enigmatic substances, evoke a feeling of wonder, and suggest intrinsic potentialities. Forms that engage the body and capture the gaze invite the mind to disengage from grinding rationality and open itself to intuitive revelation. Contemplating various paths to knowledge, her research compares rational forms of scrutiny, such as modern science, with intuitive ones, like divination, which is a practice that involves seeking information through the use of special materials, objects, or patterns that aid in channeling intuition or accessing the divine/supernatural. Claire’s most current works reference various materials and methods people have employed in an attempt to illuminate the dark recesses of mystery; to extract order from randomness by any means necessary, and to give the feeling of security that certainty brings.
