Shamans gather natural items like wood and bone to create amulets and talismans. In this manner, Leilani Gonzales uses detritus and everyday materials of the modern world to create adornments that comfort the mind and soul in a time of rapid technological change. Gonzales uses bronze insect screen to create three-dimensional mandalas that double as metaphysical Faraday cages. These structures protect the senses from malignant energies that emanate from the glow of the touchscreen—energies that seek to modify our behavior and monitor our every move. The resulting armor empowers the wearer to reclaim their autonomy while resisting the influence of the algorithm.
